C10+Phibs This project was created in response to Melbourne Fringe Furniture 2008. This year's theme is 'Make Your Mark'. We interpreted this quite literally by inviting expressions of interest from the local graffiti community to customise a C10 white vinyl chair. Phibs was the commissioned artist, taking on the chair as a blank canvas and making it his own. Referencing tribal and urban tattoo art, the anthropomorphic lines of the furniture are further invigorated by the introduction of colour and pattern, overlaying and wrapping the object. The treatment is far from random, a common perception of street graffiti, but instead carefully considered and juxtaposed. Using automotive spray dyes, rather than paints, the pigment does not merely sit on the surface of the object but penetrates its synthetic skin to become part of the fabric itself. Phibs is a Melbourne based graffiti artist, working out of the prolific Everfresh collective. His work is inspired by his fascination for the natural world and an interest in mythology and symbols of different cultures. He has developed a unique, decorative style that can be recognized at a glance. Limited Edition pieces are now available by commission from the C & S Series, please contact Yellow Diva for further information and pricing. Fringe Furniture is at Melbourne Museum 24 September - 12 October 2008 http://www.phibs.com http://everfreshstudio.com http://melbournefringe.com.au Back to List |
